Lunenburg, NS, February 14, 2013 – 2013 promises to be a big year for Canada’s leading seafood company, High Liner Foods.

High Liner is committed to sourcing 100% of its wild caught seafood from certified sustainable or responsible fisheries and 100% of its aquaculture seafood from certified sustainable or responsible sources by the end of 2013.

As of today, 60% of wild caught High Liner products by sales volume are already certified by the world’s leading certification organization for wild caught seafood, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). These products feature the MSC ecolabel. In the coming months, consumers will see the MSC ecolabel on more and more High Liner products.

“When you purchase High Liner products with the MSC ecolabel, you are helping to protect our oceans,” said Bill DiMento, Corporate Director of Sustainability for High Liner Foods. “Our ocean-friendly products are another reason to feel good about serving High Liner seafood to your family.”

The introduction of MSC-certified products follows the landmark partnership between High Liner and MSC in May 2012 to support the mutual goal of sustainable fisheries.

“With its broad range of products, this has been a major undertaking by High Liner and the company should be commended for its efforts,” said Rupert Howes, Chief Executive Officer of MSC. “What makes High Liner’s commitment to seafood sustainability exceptional is that in addition to identifying suppliers who are already engaged in sustainable practices, High Liner has played a key role in encouraging and assisting fisheries around the world to become sustainable.”

High Liner has been actively engaged in Fishery Improvement Projects for Russian Pollock, Russian Wild Salmon and North Atlantic Cod in the waters off southern Newfoundland. These projects help fisheries become sustainable and achieve MSC certification.

“We know how important the future of our planet is to families,” added DiMento. “That is why we are also taking a proactive role in improving fisheries and aquaculture programs globally.”

Please visit highlinersustainability.com for further information regarding our sustainability commitment.

Patch.com, January 10, 2013 - U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-NH, learns how Portsmouth firm is using some energy efficient technologies to reduce costs.

U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen learned firsthand Wednesday how High Liner Foods officials in Portsmouth have taken steps to reduce their energy consumption and how legislation she sponsored could help them even more.

Shaheen, D-NH, toured the frozen seafood processing plant with company officials and members of the media to see how two provisions of Senate Bill 1000, the Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act, that were passed into law could make a difference.

Along the way, she observed the company’s assembly lines, where several types of seafood products are processed and packaged before they make their way to supermarkets across the country. Shaheen also had a chance to sample some of the company’s cracked peppercorn Tilapia fish and said she enjoyed it.

She also remarked, “My kids used to eat a lot of fish sticks,” when she first arrived at the firm that employs 200 people and will soon swell to 330 employees after High Liner Foods closes a processing plant it owns in Danvers, Mass.

Shaheen said one provision that was passed into law that could help companies like High Liner Foods is the energy management and data collection requirement that would make it easier for companies to know how much power they use.

“One of the first things we need to do is to keep track of what we are using, which you have done,” Shaheen said.

One provision of the bill she co-sponsored with U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, that did not get passed by Congress that could help High Liner Foods is the electric motor rebate program, she said.

“One of the biggest barriers to getting the energy efficient technology in place is getting the capital,” she said.

Bill DiMento, High Liner Foods’ corporate director of sustainability, explained that the company has taken several steps to reduce its energy consumption to improve its bottom line and would like to do more things with Congress’ help. He said it costs the company $1.3 million a year for the energy it needs for its operations inside the 195,000-square-foot plant, and energy represents its third-highest cost behind raw materials and personnel.

DiMento said the plant has installed LED lighting in its freezers and T8 fluorescent lighting in its offices to reduce electricity costs. Activation lighting has also been installed in dry storage areas, he said. The company has also ordered an energy efficient natural gas boiler, he said.

Down the road, DiMento said High Liner Foods would like to add two wind powered generators to further reduce its use of fossil fuel energy. But the cost to obtain and install them is very high and the return on investment is also lengthy, he said.

Shaheen said wind power may continue to be an option for companies that want to add it because legislation that just passed in the U.S. Senate included the continuation of wind power tax credits.

“If we could add wind power generation, it would be very important to keep this company very competitive for many years to come,” DiMento said.

Shaheen concurred, “Energy efficiency is the first fuel.”

She added that there are already many energy efficient technologies that are available to companies now, but “the problem is how do we incentivize them and make them available now.”

Lunenburg, NS, May 8, 2012 – Canada’s leading supplier of seafood to retailers, High Liner Foods, is taking a major step forward in its sustainability efforts by forming a partnership with the Marine Stewardship Council, the world’s leading certification organization and ecolabeling program for wild- capture seafood.

High Liner is committed to sourcing 100% of its seafood from certified sustainable or responsible aquaculture sources by the end of 2013. High Liner has committed to label all of its wild caught seafood with the MSC ecolabel, a trust mark that assures consumers the seafood comes from a certified sustainable fishery.

“The partnership with MSC in Canada is a key step in our commitment to bringing responsibly sourced seafood to families across the country,” said Henry Demone, President and CEO of High Liner Foods.

Beginning this month, Canadian shoppers will begin to see the MSC ecolabel on High Liner wild caught products, as well as High Liner’s own “Responsibly Sourced” ecolabel on both wild caught and farmed seafood products. These labels will be featured on more and more retail products over the coming months.

“Today marks an important milestone for the MSC and High Liner Foods, and it is a proud day for both organizations because it represents a major step forward in seafood sustainability,” said Rupert Howes, Chief Executive Officer of MSC. “High Liner’s commitment to source all wild caught seafood from MSC-certified fisheries by the end of 2013 and display the MSC ecolabel on certified wild-capture products will assure Canadian shoppers they can feel confident about the seafood choices they make, while playing a direct role in having sustainable seafood supplies in the future. It is wonderful to see that Canada’s largest seafood company is taking this significant step in its commitment to sustainability. By working together, we can strengthen sustainability efforts.”

“Seafood sustainability is a complex matter but one that is vitally important to the future of our oceans,” said Demone.

Since making its commitment to 100% sustainability in late 2010, High Liner has developed a comprehensive database to identify the sustainability status of all of its seafood. Over the coming months, High Liner, in collaboration with MSC, will be working with retailers in Canada to provide detailed information regarding their sustainability efforts.

March 12, 2012

LUNENBURG, NS, March 12, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ –Seafood company nearly doubles certified sustainable seafood purchases in 2011 compared to prior year

High Liner Foods Inc. (TSX: HLF) (TSX: HLF.A), the leading value-added seafood supplier in North America, announced today that it has made significant progress since the company announced its sustainability commitment in late 2010, when it set a goal of sourcing all of its seafood from certified sustainable or responsible fisheries and aquaculture farms by the end of 2013.

“It’s very encouraging to see the progress High Liner has made in such a short time,” said Jim Cannon, CEO of the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, High Liner’s NGO partner. “High Liner’s commitment to sustainability and efforts to help encourage the rebuilding of fisheries are examples of how a major seafood buyer can achieve a win-win for the environment and their business.”

In 2011, High Liner achieved the following toward its sustainability commitment:

Procurement of raw material

High Liner nearly doubled the amount of certified sustainable raw materials it purchases, both wild caught and aquaculture farm-raised, from 27 percent in 2010 to 52 percent at the end of 2011. These figures do not include products of the recently-acquired Icelandic Seafood, and High Liner is reviewing the sustainability status of Icelandic Seafood brand raw materials.

Fishery Improvement Projects

Working with SFP and other organizations, High Liner provided assistance in a Russian pollock Fishery Improvement Project (FIP). The Russian Pollock Catchers Association is working hard to achieve MSC certification.

High Liner joined an effort overseen by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to help drive the 3Ps Atlantic cod fishery of Newfoundland toward entering the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) assessment process.

NGO community relations

High Liner extended its partnership with SFP for another two years (through the end of 2013). SFP and High Liner are working together to develop programs and strategies to ensure High Liner Foods’ customers of the sustainability of their products.

The company continued to work closely with staff at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, WWF and Ocean Wise, a conservation program of the Vancouver Aquarium, on sustainability initiatives.

Participation in industry-wide initiatives

High Liner was the principal sponsor of the Seafood Summit 2011, in Vancouver, B.C.

Bill DiMento, Corporate Director of Sustainability for High Liner Foods, testified in December 2011 to a U.S. Senate panel in support of the Pirate Fishing Elimination Act, which would prevent fishing vessels from offloading illegally caught seafood in U.S. ports.

High Liner worked with the National Fisheries Institute’s Traceability Team to drive improvements in traceability systems that would not add significant costs to the seafood supply chain.

“Reaching our goal of being 100 percent sustainable by the end of next year is by no means a finish line, but another major step forward to meeting our sustainability commitment,” said Henry Demone, President and CEO of High Liner Foods. “It will be an important milestone to achieve, and while we still have a long road ahead of us, we are right on track to get there.”

“We recognize that we have the responsibility to ensure that our oceans are healthy now and for future generations, at the same time maintaining exceptional value and quality for our customers,” DiMento said. “No company can do this alone, but by working closely with our suppliers and our customers, we’re seeing progress happening.”

High Liner Foods Announces Commitment to Purchase Only from Sustainable and Responsible Sources by End of 2013

Seafood company to insist on measurable progress by uncertified suppliers

Lunenberg, NS, Nov. 29, 2010 – High Liner Foods Inc., a leading North American processor and marketer of superior quality seafood, announced today that the company has made a commitment to source all of its seafood from certified sustainable or responsible fisheries and aquaculture farms by the end of 2013.

With this commitment, High Liner Foods will require wild-caught seafood and farmed products to either come from fisheries and aquaculture farms certified as sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), the Global Aquaculture Alliance’s (GAA) Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) program and the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), respectively, or require those suppliers not certified to be on a clear, defined path toward being sustainable and capable of documenting measurable improvements. High Liner Foods will collaborate with its NGO partner, theSustainable Fisheries Partnership, to achieve these objectives.

“High Liner Foods is committed to our goal of doing business only with suppliers who share our vision of sourcing seafood responsibly, and with a dedication to environmental stewardship to ensure that our natural resources are available for generations to follow,” said Henry Demone, president and CEO of High Liner Foods. “This proactive, ongoing effort will include engaging with our suppliers in projects that make the long-term viability of these farms and fisheries possible.”

For those fisheries that are not under assessment by MSC, High Liner Foods will ensure that they are “responsible” fisheries. This means those fisheries must use “best in class” methodologies to demonstrate documented improvements in fishing practices as reported by, FishSource™ (www.FishSource.org) or evaluated by an equivalent standard. For those fisheries that have made sufficient improvements to enter into the MSC program, High Liner Foods will require them to enter the full MSC assessment process.

In addition, by the end of 2013, all of the uncertified sources that High Liner Foods works with must have undergone an independent evaluation, and enter a third-party assessment program such as MSC, GAA’s BAP program, or the ASC. Also, all sources undergoing improvements will be required by High Liner Foods to report an improvement work plan and milestones to be achieved.

“As an organization, one of our key strategic goals is to be proactive and bring about positive change for our industry,” said Bill DiMento, corporate director of sustainability at High Liner Foods. “We will work closely with our uncertified suppliers to drive meaningful, quantifiable changes, ensuring that they are acting responsibly, and that they are on a path to being certified sustainable.”
